Want to Go Green?

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

EV Charging StationPGE is offering free EV charging stations to businesses as part of the federal EV Project. Until the end of this year, grand funding is available toward installation of free EV charging stations for businesses that are destinations, such as retail or urban centers with publicly available parking spaces.

PE is working with ECOtality, which is the government contractor selected for the EV Project, to install the charging stations at local homes and businesses. ECOtality provides the charging stations and will provide a credit toward the installation.

If you are interested in installing an EV charging station, you can email PGE at PlugIn@pgn.com. They’ll provide you with details about the program and figure out if your location is a good fit. They’ll also get you connected with the pros at ECOtality.

Want to learn more about the EV charging stations? Read more about EV charging stations at PGE.

Friends plan benefit auction for Rick Allen

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

A benefit auction, spaghetti dinner and evening of music will be held for devoted community member, philanthropist and owner of The Reel Tackle Shop Richard “Rick” Allen on Saturday, March 12, to raise funds associated with his medical bills as he continues his fight with cancer.

Last October, Allen was diagnosed with an aggressive, deadly form of cancer. He’s put up a heroic fight. Sadly, though, he is now listed as terminally ill.

According to friend and auction organizer Tony Profitt, Allen’s medical bills have gone far beyond the coverage of his health insurance and hopes funds raised at the auction will help ease the burden of those expenses.

Allen has been dedicated to the community and has given to many causes including the donation of firewood to veterans during the winter months and encouraging students to stay in school by teaching fishing-rod building to students after school, to name just a few.

“Rick is well known all over town and everybody loves him,” Profitt said. “I have known him for eight years and he has been a philanthropist the entire time.”

The benefit auction, which will be held at Camp Namanu in Sandy, starts at 3 p.m. with a raffle and auction. Already scheduled for auctioning are guided float fishing trips on the Sandy River and a weeklong trip at Camp Namanu summer camp for one lucky child.

“We have donations coming in throughout the community,” Profitt said.

For those hungry, the event will feature a spaghetti dinner that will be followed by the rockin’ sounds of the ’70s and ’80s performed by the Water Buffaloes band until 11 p.m.

This alcohol-free event is open to the entire family with both adult and youth activities. The event is free, but organizers are asking for $10-$15 donations to help with the cost of the dinner.

Organizers also are asking for items that can be auctioned at the event as well as cash donations. They can be dropped off at the Sandy Chamber of Commerce or by calling its Executive Director Hollis MacLean-Wenzel at 503-668-4006. Camp Namanu is located at 10300 S.E. Camp Namanu Road in Sandy.
Getting there

If you plan on attending the benefit for Rick Allen, these are the directions to Camp Namanu on the Sandy River. The total drive is about 6 miles from Sandy.

• Follow Southeast Ten Eyck Road out of Sandy.

• Take the first left to stay on Ten Eyck.

• Stay on Ten Eyck until you reach Southeast Bull Run Road.

• Turn right onto Southeast Bull Run Road.

• Keep right at the fork.

• Turn left at Southeast Camp Namanu Road.

Law Making 101

Freshman representative learns the ropes in the Oregon Legislature
Rep. Mark Johnson has held office for less than a month, but the Republican from Hood River already has reached one important conclusion.
“In this business, it doesn’t do much good to be way off in the fringe when it comes to policy development,” said Johnson, who represents District 52, encompassing Sandy, Boring and the mountain villages.
As a freshman legislator, Johnson has a full plate of leadership roles including his position as co-chairman of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources committee and the House Higher Education subcommittee.
He also serves as member of the Business and Labor committee and continues to serve at his home as a member of the Hood River County School Board.
With barely enough time to exhale, Johnson is still getting up to speed on his duties as a state policy maker amid the first-ever even split between Democrats and Republicans in Oregon’s House of Representatives.
“The biggest adjustment so far is the mental capacity it takes to keep up with what’s going on,” Johnson said on Feb. 16 from his office in Salem. “What you are required to do in this job is engage and disengage in different policy discussions as many as three or four times an hour. That’s the challenge. You have to do mental gymnastics in a short period of time.”
