This Week Around Town…

In Around Town this week, we would like to recognize a Sandy High student Rebecca Woodcock. Rebecca has chosen to hold a fundraiser for her senior project. This fundraiser is to help local 3-year-old Myiah raise money for therapy that is needed. Myiah has Rett Syndrome. Rett syndrome causes seizures, reducing mobility, and making it difficult to speak or swallow. If you would like to help Rebecca raise funds for Myiah’s therapy you can donate items for the rummage sale fundraiser she is putting together by e-mailing miracle4myiah@yahoo.com or call 503.668.8117. Design a New Transit Center for Downtown Sandy

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

The City of Sandy is beginning the process of designing a new transit center to be located at Centennial Plaza (next to the museum) in downtown Sandy.

The new center will be the new eastern terminus for Sandy Transit, SAM, and will serve as a transfer point for riders to connect with other area transit service.

As part of this design process you are invited to attend this community workshop to find out more about the project and provide comments.

Attend the Workshop

The workshop will be held on
Thursday, November 17, 2011, 6:30 P.M.
City Hall Council Chambers, 39250 Pioneer Blvd.

The meeting format will begin with a presentation, followed by a question and answer period, then time for discussion with designers and an opportunity to select preferred design elements.

When the new transit center is completed several current bus stops will be eliminated including:
• City Hall
• Wolf & Pioneer
• Langensand & Hwy 26
• Langensand & McCormick
• Post Office
• Revenue
• Meinig & Proctor (possibly)

As always the local dial-a-ride service, STAR, will continue to be available to serve these areas.

For questions about this project please contact Julie Stephens, Transit Manager at 503-489-0925 or e-mail to jstephens@cityofsandy.com.

Excellence in Downtown Revitalization Award

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

state of oregonThe City of Sandy received the “Outstanding Design Project” award for the Sandy Façade Improvement Program at the Oregon Main Street Conference Excellence in Downtown Revitalization awards celebration last night in Baker City. This award recognizes excellence in a construction or rehabilitation project enhancing a downtown or neighborhood commercial district in appearance or function.
“The City of Sandy’s achievement represents the creativity and hard work taking place across the state to strengthen our downtown communities,” said Sheri Stuart, coordinator, Oregon Main Street. “We are pleased to recognize them for their dedication and commitment to creating vibrant communities, and growing Oregon’s economy while preserving and enhancing their sense of place.”

As the city’s slogan, “Gateway to Mt. Hood” states, Sandy’s future is closely tied to the mountain community. As such, in 2008 the Sandy City Council adopted the “Sandy Style” design standards that apply to both new construction and exterior remodels. The Sandy Façade Improvement program is a comprehensive approach to enhancing the appearance of buildings in the downtown area. The program includes two components: a master plan, including design schematics, and a matching grant program funded through the Urban Renewal Agency. All efforts funded through the program have either applied the standards or developed a design solution appropriate to the historical character of the specific building.

The project has had a tremendously positive effect on the downtown area. Since its inception in 2009, 26 buildings have benefited representing about $600,000 in total project costs. The number of empty storefronts has decreased and there have been no new vacancies. This program may well be the most ambitious façade program in the state. City staff constantly receives comments from locals and visitors about how good the city is looking.

The Awards Presentation was a highlight of the Oregon Main Street Conference, a popular annual conference that brings together people with an interest in downtown revitalization. Baker City hosted this year’s event, which included sessions on the ingredients of creating an outstanding downtown destination, achieving sustainability while maintaining historic significance, nuts and bolts of downtown circulation, attracting and keeping volunteers, essentials of an eye-catching and appealing storefront, preserving with authenticity, getting started on business retention and recruitment.
