Recreation In and Around Sandy

The recreation in Sandy starts with skiing on nearby Mt. Hood, which features four world class resorts. Each are within an hour’s drive from Sandy. Cooper Spur, Mt. Hood Meadows, Ski Bowl and Timberline.

To the east you will find the Mt. Hood National Forest, which offers fishing, biking, hiking, and camping opportunities. The nearby Sandy River offers bountiful rafting and fishing closer to town.

If golfing is your forte, there are three local courses which are enjoyed by many.

Sandy holds its annual Mountain Festival every year on the second weekend on July. An estimated 65,000 attend this event, which boasts a parade, a carnival, and an open-air artisians market which is held in Meinig Park. The park contains two outdoor stages that run music, dancing and comedy acts through the duration of the festival.

The Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the ever-popular Music Fair and Feast on the same week as the Mountain Festival. This event features a Family Night, Jr. Talent Contest, wine from Sandy’s own Wasson Winery, beer garden, microbrews and a variety of food, as well as live musical entertainment.

Sandy is the home to many picturesque farms featuring alpacas, organic produce, and nursery stock. The Sandy Area Farm Loop brochure was developed in 2009 with the help of local farm owners by Mary Stewart, under contract with the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce. Funding was made possible through a grant from the Clackamas County Tourism Development Council. You can pick up a brochure at our Chamber office and Visitor’s Center or print a pdf version on a page on the City of Sandy website. This is a great way to discover unique and interesting places to visit only 30 minutes from Portland!

Located within Sandy is the Olin Bignall Aquatic Center, which offers year round swimming, lessons for all ages, and water aerobics in an Olympic sized pool. (503-668-4400)

Sandy also has a library which contains a wide variety of books, videos, and CD’s.

Sandy is rich in history, making it a natural stop for folks who enjoy antiques, museums, and collectibles.

The younger generation can burn off some energy at Fantasy Forest, located in Meinig Park. The play park was built entirely by volunteers, just for children.

The Oregon Trail School District is committed to serving youth in the Sandy area, and allowed the Sandy Skate Association to build a 10,000 square foot skate park at Cedar Ridge Middle School. Local skaters and BMX riders designed the park and welcome everyone to use it, but ask that everyone be considerate of the neighbors and to the police. The park is closed while school is in session.
