Sandy’s new sign code rocks!

Change allows variations in A-frame signs often placed on city sidewalks.

The city of Sandy would like business owners to show a little creativity. Instead of the forest green, metal, rectangular A-frame signs the city has been requiring for several years, it now is open to different materials, colors, shapes, lettering – whatever is unique to each business.

Of course, amid the new flexibility, there is an application and approval process to help the city avoid signs that are unprofessional or offensive.

There are still a few rules, but overall the new sign ordinance allows businesses to market their products or services in creative ways.

The approval process includes an application and two drawings to show what the sign would look like after it is constructed.

After application and payment of a fee to the city, the drawings are submitted to a design review committee, and those receiving approval must be shown to city officials after construction for final approval.

The new regulations are designed to identify each business, promote its merchandise or services and attract customers.

To help businesses upgrade their existing A-frame signs from the green metal dinosaurs that litter Sandy sidewalks, the city is offering grants of up to $100 each – while the $2,000 set aside lasts (first come, first served). Funds will be reimbursed after work is completed, said Associate Planner Suzanne Hicks.

The main goal of the committee, Hicks said, is to provide a streamlined review process. Signs that comply with the new guidelines should expect approval within five business days.

Information on the new A-frame design guidelines and permit application process is located on the website at cityofsandy.com. Click on the “Business” tab on the home page and then click on the small, Building Department link on the right side of the page. Look for these two documents at the bottom of the next page: “A-frame sign design guidelines and application” and “A-frame sign design tips and examples.”
