Library wins grant for expansion, renovation

$25,000 allocation will help build a community room; other grant applications in the works
The Sandy Library has received its first grant for use in the creation of a community room in next year’s expansion and renovation of the library.
Beth Scarth, director of the Sandy and Hoodland Public Libraries, announced the news to the Sandy City Council last Monday night.
“Last fall the library began making applications to foundations for grants to assist the library’s efforts to install a technologically modern community room in the space the library will be taking over from the Police Department next summer,” Scarth said. “I’m proud to announce our first grant – thanks to the Oregon Community Foundation. One of the funds managed by the Oregon Community Foundation, the Jerome S. and Barbara Bishchoff Library Fund, generously allocated $25,000 toward the creation of that room. We are extremely grateful for this gift.”
The library is working on the design of the renovation/expansion, with its architects and construction manager. Through the winter, the plans will be refined and the cost of the project ascertained. The project will be funded in part by a capital distribution from Clackamas County (a condition of the formation of the library district), by funds allocated by the City Council, and by donations and grants.
Scarth said the library has submitted several grant applications to Oregon based foundations, with two more site visits in December from staff of various foundations.
“The grant money we receive is critical to the quality of the planned community room,” she said. “We are heartened to have this first grant, from the Oregon Community Fund, confirm the merits of our project and look forward, within the next year or so, to presenting the Sandy community a wonderful meeting room.”
