Topics Covered

Topics include:

Transportation, housing, and accessible outdoor spaces and buildings

Opportunities for social, cultural, and civic engagement

Services that support greater independence

Why Participate

“America is aging, and Clackamas County is no different,” said Brenda Durbin, director of Clackamas County Social Services. “Events like Let’s PLAY and the engAGE Expo give us a chance to work directly with our older population to make sure that Clackamas County is an age friendly place.”
As large numbers of baby-boomers reach retirement age, many communities have increased their efforts to provide meaningful opportunities for older adults-many of whom remain physically and socially active through their 80s and beyond. Current trends show that people beyond age 60 account for an ever-growing percentage of participants in community service positions, faith-based organizations and online social networking as well as arts and recreational groups.

Lifelong participation in social, creative and physical activities has proven health benefits, including retaining mobility, muscle mass and cognitive abilities. But older adults are not the only ones who benefit from their engagement in community life. Studies show their interactions with family, friends and neighbors across generations enrich the lives of everyone involved. Young people who have significant relationships with a grandparent or elder report that these relationships helped shape their values, goals and life choices and gave them a sense of identity and roots.

While Clackamas County provides services, support and resources to older Americans year around, Older Americans Month is a great opportunity to show special appreciation for some of the most beloved citizens.

Clackamas County celebrates 1,000 rebate incentives

Saving homeowners energy and money, creates jobs. One thousand rebates have been given to Clackamas County homeowners and home builders as incentives to weatherize their existing homes and build more energy efficient new homes through the Energize Clackamas County program in the County’s Office of Sustainability. The program, funded by a federal Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant, has provided more than $550,000 in rebates, resulting in:

• Almost $2 million of investments in energy savings;
• 10 new jobs for local residents;
• $140,000 of savings per year in energy costs for County residents, and
• Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 150 cars from the road.

The Clackamas County Board of Commissioners celebrated these achievements

Saving homeowners energy and money, creates jobs

One thousand rebates have been given to Clackamas County homeowners and home builders as incentives to weatherize their existing homes and build more energy efficient new homes through the Energize Clackamas County program in the County’s Office of Sustainability. The program, funded by a federal Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant, has provided more than $550,000 in rebates, resulting in:
•	Almost $2 million of investments in energy savings;
•	10 new jobs for local residents;
•	$140,000 of savings per year in energy costs for County residents, and
•	Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 150 cars from the road.

The Clackamas County Board of Commissioners celebrated these achievements today by presenting ceremonial rebate checks to two homeowners who are participating in the program — Sara Bennett of Wilsonville and Trina Borne of West Linn. They also recognized the valuable participation of Energy Trust of Oregon, Northwest Insulation LLC, and the Home Performance Contractors Guild of Oregon and Earth Advantage.

Commissioner Ann Lininger thanked the Office of Sustainability staff for their efforts and noted that they have also worked to improve the energy efficiency of County buildings.

“Reducing energy costs for the County frees up money for other important priorities,” Lininger said, “and all these energy efficiency efforts create local jobs that can’t be outsourced.”

ENERGIZE is coordinated by the Clackamas County Office of Sustainability with support from Energy Trust and a $3.1 million federal Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Energize pulls together a number of programs to encourage homeowners, homebuilders, businesses and public agencies to increase energy-saving measures.

Other ENERGIZE programs include energy upgrades to businesses and public buildings, free weatherization for people meeting income qualifications; energy efficiency education, and support for one-stop indepth no-money-down residential energy retrofits through Clean Energy Works Oregon.

Is it spring? The calendar says it is and the daffodils are in bloom, however the weather is not saying it’s spring yet. I know it’s hard to want to go work in your landscape however there are some things that need attention.

Is there moss in your grass?

If so now is a great time to apply a moss treatment. Once the moss has died out rake it out and seed where it might be thin.

Planting flowers, trees or Shrubs?

Plant annuals for color

Apply barkdust to your beds, it helps keep moisture in where your shrubs are so they do not dry out as fast. It also beautifies your landscape.

Divide your bulbs

plant trees and shrubs while the rains are still upon us

Do you have a pond?

We are coming out of winter into spring and there are some things that you need to do to get off to a great start this season with your pond.

Net out any debris that might be in the bottom of your pond, make sure it is cleaned out as good as possible, clean out your skimmer if you have one, back flush your pressurized filter or if you have a biological filter clean out the filter material.

Put your UV light back in and if you haven’t been applying your beneficial bacteria you will need to start.

Salt your pond with a non iodized salt at 1 pound of salt per 100 gallons of water. You need to dissolve the salt into a bucket of water and then pour it down your waterfall, this procedure is really good for your fish. It’s good for their slime coat and coming out of winter it will help with any bacterial issues that might arise from the cold winter.

Fish do not need to be fed until your ponds temperature sustains 50 degrees or greater then you will start feeding your fish a wheat germ food until temps get to about 62-65 degrees then you will change to a summer staple blend of food.

Whew, that should get us off to a good start for some some spring cleaning!

This Week Around Town…

We would like to know if our members that are not on main street would be interested on First Friday’s to set up a table here at our office? Meet new people, let them know who you are, what you do and so on. If any of you are interested please contact Karey at the office.

Have you ever wanted to advertise at the Sandy Cinema, but it was just too expensive? The chamber is willing to provide a monthly slide where we could fit 6 or so business adds on the slide and it will be visible for an entire month. This summer the Cinema is expecting one of it’s best summer of movies. They have several blockbuster movies starting out in May with AVENGERS. The ad space would run your business about 60.00 a month and will circulate through before a movie begins. If this of any interest to you, again please contact Karey at the office.

Sandy High teachers would like to invite local business leaders to share their expertise and resources with students. Visit the Sandy High website to find out how you can help make learning more relevant and bridge the gap between class and career. Teachers have completed profiles that describe what they teach, and what some of their specific classroom needs are. The greatest need is for guest speakers, but some specific supplies are also being requested, including everything from Sharpies to computers, binders to bird seed, and ceramics tools to power tools. Check out the profiles to see how you can help connect our future workforce with the workplace. The profiles, with contact information, are posted at Oregon Trail School District .

The U.S. Postal Service wants the small business world to know about its direct mail shipping service for small businesses, called ”Every Door Direct Mail.”

With Every Door Direct Mail, small businesses including restaurants, auto dealerships and doctor’s offices can send out direct mail campaigns such as postcards and brochures, with postage rates as low as 14.5 cents. The remarkable thing is that you don’t need a mailing list with specific addresses and/or names, or a postal permit. Such items typically drive up the costs and effort in a direct mail campaign.

Instead, the Postal Service’s website provides an online mapping tool. You can choose a city, county, zip code or even a neighborhood (i.e., within a 5-mile radius of a specific address). You just choose the area, and the direct mail will be delivered without the need to affix labels or print specific addresses.

The tool is fairly easy to use. Once you’ve registered your business and learn the tool the first time, thereafter it only takes minutes to schedule a simple local mailing. It walks you through the process step by step. The amount of your postage cost is displayed instantly online. Once you pay, you print out the documentation and take it to the Post Office along with your bundles of direct mail pieces.

This is part of a larger initiative by the Postal Service to use innovation and technology to serve small businesses.

The Postal Service also announced the redesign of its Click N ship site, where businesses and consumers can buy postage and print shipping labels online. The site is a counterpart to the “If it Fits, It Ships” flat rate mantra for Priority Mail packages (see above), where you can get the packaging for free and then go online to pay for the postage, print a label, and even schedule a pickup. No postage scale required!

The current Click N Ship site has been quite successful with small businesses — there are a million registered users and half of them are small businesses, notes Paul Vogel, president and chief marketing/sales officer, U.S. Postal Service. Coming this month (April 2012) will be a dedicated business version of the Click N Ship site, designed for small businesses that ship between 10 and 100 pieces of mail per day. Business Click N Ship will have a desktop app and expanded payment options.
