Redinger finalist for vacant Ann Arbor superintendent position
If hired, would take new post this July
Oregon Trail School District Superintendent Shelley Redinger was notified Friday she is one of three finalists applying for the vacant superintendent position in the Ann Arbor Public School District.
She interviewed for the position early last week and was told by the school district on Friday she was one of three finalists selected in its hiring process.
Redinger said on Saturday she has been approached about several superintendent openings the past couple of years and applied for the job in Ann Arbor, Mich., because of its “size, reputation and location convenient to both the University of Michigan and one of her husband’s work offices.
“It would be a good move for both of us,” Redinger said.
Ann Arbor Public Schools serves the City of Ann Arbor and parts of eight surrounding townships covering 125 square miles. The district’s 20 elementary schools, five middle schools, three comprehensive high schools, three alternative high schools, and one pre-school had a fall 2010 enrollment of 16,536 pupils.
The district employs approximately 3,000 full and part-time staff members and has a general fund budget of $191 million. It is the fifth largest school district in Michigan.
Redinger expects the process to unfold over the next few weeks. If she is accepted to the position, Redinger said she would finish the school year at her current post and then take her new position in July.
Redinger has served as Oregon Trail’s superintendent since 2007. In other districts, she had previously held teacher, principal and administrator positions. Last April, the Oregon Trail School District Board of Directors approved a renewal of Redinger’s contract as superintendent for an additional three years, though June 2013.
Redinger said she has applied to other vacant superintendent positions but because of confidentiality reasons, she couldn’t name the school districts where she applied.
