This Week Around Town…

St. Patrick’s Day is here and there is so much information out there about St. Patrick’s Day. How do you find out what is real and what is not? Today I will share the story of how wearing green became a tradition. Originally, the colour associated with Saint Patrick was blue. Over the years the colour green and its association with St. Patrick’s day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St. Patrick’s’ Day as early as the 17th century. Saint Patrick was said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the Pagan Irish, and the wearing and display of the shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become an ubiquitous feature of the day. In the 1798 rebellion, to make a political statement, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on March 17th in hopes of catching public attention. The phrase “the wearing of the green’ meaning to wear a shamrock on one’s clothing, derives from a song of the same name. Well now, that was some interesting information. It makes me want to go and find out why the original color was blue. We hope you all have a fun and Safe St. Patrick’s Day Weekend. Maybe someone will find a rainbow with a pot of gold at the end, or find a four leave clover in Meinig Park?!

Chamber News & Events

This Week Around Town…
We were glad to see everyone that came out for First Friday. The Chamber would like to try something new for First Friday along with our Artist Receptions. We would like to help our non main street members and home based members by offering them a space at the Chamber Office and Visitor Center to promote their business. Friday April 6th will be the next First Friday and we would like to do a trial run! If anyone is interested please let Karey know at the Chamber office, first come first serve basis.

On a another note, we will be working on spreading a little love around. Have you ever heard of Yelp? Well if you haven’t you should check it out. Yelp is an on-line urban city guide that helps people find cool places to eat, shop, drink, relax, and play. Everything is based on the informed opinions of a vibrant and active community of locals in the know. Yelp is the fun and easy way to find, review, and talk about what’s great/not so great in your world. Go see what people are saying on Yelp and while you are there show us a little love too.

The temporary location will be closing at 5pm February 19th and the newly remodeled location will be opening at 10am March 5th. The newly remodeled library will have several new features one being a Community Room that can be reserved for use even during non library hours. You may notice on the beautiful outside the library will be energy efficient with solar panels on the roof as well as a system they added in that will dim the LED lights when outside light enters a room. This Week Around Town…

In Around Town this week, we would like to recognize a Sandy High student Rebecca Woodcock. Rebecca has chosen to hold a fundraiser for her senior project. This fundraiser is to help local 3-year-old Myiah raise money for therapy that is needed. Myiah has Rett Syndrome. Rett syndrome causes seizures, reducing mobility, and making it difficult to speak or swallow. If you would like to help Rebecca raise funds for Myiah’s therapy you can donate items for the rummage sale fundraiser she is putting together by e-mailing miracle4myiah@yahoo.com or call 503.668.8117. The Rummage sale will be held February 4th from 9am-2pm at the Sandy Community/Senior Center 38348 Pioneer Blvd.

Chamber News & Events

This Week Around Town…
2012 Chamber Business Directory
We are now in the proofing stage of the 2012 Directory.
The Chamber office will have a hard copy for you to view your
listing or ad before it goes to print.

We will have the hard copy here January 21st -

We encourage you to stop in and take a look at your
listing and/or ad in the directory. The Chamber staff
will be proofing as much as we can.

It will go to print as soon as we give Northwest
Connections the go ahead.
We should have the new directories by the end
of January or first of February. We will then distribute
them at the Chamber Office and Visitor Center, Fred
Meyer, Joe’s Donuts, Clackamas County Bank and
City Hall. If you would like a small quantity to
have at your place of business, please let us know.
You are more than welcome to pick some up
at the office.
