This Week Around Town…
In Around Town this week, we would like to recognize a Sandy High student Rebecca Woodcock. Rebecca has chosen to hold a fundraiser for her senior project. This fundraiser is to help local 3-year-old Myiah raise money for therapy that is needed. Myiah has Rett Syndrome. Rett syndrome causes seizures, reducing mobility, and making it difficult to speak or swallow. If you would like to help Rebecca raise funds for Myiah’s therapy you can donate items for the rummage sale fundraiser she is putting together by e-mailing miracle4myiah@yahoo.com or call 503.668.8117. The Rummage sale will be held February 4th from 9am-2pm at the Sandy Community/Senior Center 38348 Pioneer Blvd.

Chamber News and Events
This Week Around Town…
As many of you know, Hollis was recently diagnosed and treated for a moderately aggressive form of breast cancer. She had surgery last month and this week she started a course of chemotherapy that is expected to take between 18 and 24 weeks. Needless to say, she will be on extended medical leave while her body battles this disease. Over the last several weeks, our Board of Directors have been working on a multi-faceted solution that will benefit Hollis and her family as well as Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce in the several months to come. Your chamber leaders are strong, professional and proactive. Last month the Board voted to hire a part-time, interim director to assist in the day-to-day operations and to maintain our relationships with businesses, city and county government. Our individual board members (both past and present) committed themselves to continue to volunteer their time by taking on additional duties as they are able. Over the past several weeks, I have seen our members, staff, government officials and community come together to support both Hollis, her family and our chamber. It has been a joy to see our community in action throughout this challenging time.
Your chamber remains open for business! We will continue to support our members and build our community in the weeks and months to come. Karey will maintain her normal schedule Monday through Friday from 9 am – 4 pm. My schedule will vary from week to week, but I will do my best to accommodate your needs in a timely manner. As always, we want to remain an asset for you and your business.
Should you wish to send Hollis a card, gift or words of encouragement, please drop them off at our office during normal business hours and we will deliver them for you. We will also be posting periodic updates here and during our networking events.
Sincerely,
Mitch Speck
Interim Chamber Director

Monthly Luncheon – Social Media and the Digital Age

Like it or not, the world today is becoming more and more dependent on the internet. More and more studies indicate that a lot of people make important decisions researching them first online.
Research also indicates that people depend on other people’s experiences to make decisions on products andservices. With the advent of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other such social media, information travels around the world much faster.
Social media can give you credibility to your online visibility (web presence), a better opportunity of being found through search, a premium avenue to provide customer service, and a cheap / effective marketing tool that will bring results if used consistently and correctly.
If you are hesitant to jump on to the internet and social media bandwagon, come find out why you should, or else you might find yourself alone on sidelines as potential customers pass you by on their way to your competitors.
Date: May 11th
Time: 12:00-1:30pm
Place: Sandy Fire Department Annex Bldg
RSVP TODAY
Speaker: Kelly Allen of Alphabetix
Catered by:Smoky Hearth

Sandy Area Chamber is Launching a Shop Local Charm Bracelet Program
Friday, April 8th, 2011
They’ve done it in Sisters and in Pendleton too!
They’ve done it in communities all over the country…
a Charm Bracelet Program designed to get customers in your door!
The Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce will run the program (purchasing all of the bracelets, necklaces and charms). We will promote the program, by advertising: ads in The Post, Banners, on our website, the city’s web site, blogging, Twitter and Facebook – any way we can.
Each participating business will simply purchase the charm they would like to sell (we will sell them to you “at cost”). You can choose the type of charm you would like if you let Karey know by April 15th… or you can come in to the Chamber and we will have a variety of charms that you can choose from.
People can collect these tiny charms one at a time. They will purchase their starter bracelet at the Sandy Visitor Center for only $5.00. Created from polished pewter this bracelet measures about 7 ½ inches long with a toggle and lobster claw clasp. A special charm commemorating the centennial will be hosted by the chamber to begin their collection. While at the Chamber they will also be given a “map” of all of the merchants and other establishments throughout the Sandy Area where they can find more charms.
Each participating business will be selling a unique charm for just $2. This should give you a profit of $1 or more depending on the charm… more importantly, you get FREE ADVERTISING and promotion to get people IN YOUR DOOR. The program will start in May and run through December 2011. If it looks like it is going well we will extend the program into 2012.
For more information and to Sign Up to be a participant, call (503) 668-4006 by April 25th!

Business Fair Luncheon & Seminar
Keynote Speakers:
Rick & Debbie Teeny
TeenyFoods, Inc
The History of Teeny Foods
Sam and Minerva Teeny launched our family business in April 1964 as Middle East Bakeries, Inc. in an old bank building in the Montavilla district of Portland, Oregon.
Sam Teeny was born in Portland, Oregon, but raised in the country of Lebanon from the age of two. He came back to Portland when he was a teenager. At age 24 Sam went back to Lebanon, married his wife, Minerva, brought her back to Oregon and started a life together. In 1963 Sam went on a hunting trip and took along the “Lebanese bread” that Minerva baked at home. This bread was the hit of the trip, and Sam was encouraged by his friends to open a bakery. Although Sam had never baked a thing in his life, he believed this was his direction from the Lord. When he tried to get a loan from the bank, he told the bank that he felt the Lord had directed him into this business and he wanted to put a Bible verse on each package of bread. The bank refused to loan him the money, as they said the Bible verses would limit his business. Sam decided that if this was indeed from the Lord, then he would open the bakery without the bank’s help. He borrowed $500 against his life insurance, and was greatly blessed when he was able to purchase a commercial mixer for only $25. He was given a commercial oven free of charge. Sam used Minerva’s recipe, coined the name “Pocket Bread”™ to describe the product, and launched Middle East Bakeries, Inc. Sam and Minerva, along with their five children, worked at the bakery during the early years. Middle East Bakeries, Inc. was to become the oldest commercial Pocket Bread™ and flat bread manufacturer in the United States!
Rick and Debbie Teeny bought the family business in 1996. In July 2003 Teeny Foods moved into a new 58,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility with ten times the old capacity. The majority of their business is propriety contract manufacturing. They specialize in custom formulation of recipes to meet their customers’ needs including all natural, whole grain, low fat, etc. Their end users consist of restaurants, sports arenas, frozen grocery and schools. In 2008, Rick and Debbie received The SBA family-owned small business of the year award.
