Visit the Sandy High website to find out how you can help make learning more relevant and bridge the gap between class and career. Teachers have completed profiles that describe what they teach, and what some of their specific classroom needs are. The greatest need is for guest speakers, but some specific supplies are also being requested, including everything from Sharpies to computers, binders to bird seed, and ceramics tools to power tools. Check out the profiles to see how you can help connect our future workforce with the workplace. The profiles, with contact information, are posted at Oregon Trail School District . U.S. Postal Service Launches Innovative Technology for Small Businesses

Friday, April 6th, 2012

The U.S. Postal Service wants the small business world to know about its direct mail shipping service for small businesses, called ”Every Door Direct Mail.”

With Every Door Direct Mail, small businesses including restaurants, auto dealerships and doctor’s offices can send out direct mail campaigns such as postcards and brochures, with postage rates as low as 14.5 cents. The remarkable thing is that you don’t need a mailing list with specific addresses and/or names, or a postal permit. Such items typically drive up the costs and effort in a direct mail campaign.

Instead, the Postal Service’s website provides an online mapping tool. You can choose a city, county, zip code or even a neighborhood (i.e., within a 5-mile radius of a specific address). You just choose the area, and the direct mail will be delivered without the need to affix labels or print specific addresses.

The tool is fairly easy to use. Once you’ve registered your business and learn the tool the first time, thereafter it only takes minutes to schedule a simple local mailing. It walks you through the process step by step. The amount of your postage cost is displayed instantly online. Once you pay, you print out the documentation and take it to the Post Office along with your bundles of direct mail pieces.

This is part of a larger initiative by the Postal Service to use innovation and technology to serve small businesses.

The Postal Service also announced the redesign of its Click N ship site, where businesses and consumers can buy postage and print shipping labels online. The site is a counterpart to the “If it Fits, It Ships” flat rate mantra for Priority Mail packages (see above), where you can get the packaging for free and then go online to pay for the postage, print a label, and even schedule a pickup. No postage scale required!

The current Click N Ship site has been quite successful with small businesses — there are a million registered users and half of them are small businesses, notes Paul Vogel, president and chief marketing/sales officer, U.S. Postal Service. Coming this month (April 2012) will be a dedicated business version of the Click N Ship site, designed for small businesses that ship between 10 and 100 pieces of mail per day. Business Click N Ship will have a desktop app and expanded payment options.

Solar workshops available for Clackamas County Residents

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Solar workshops available for Clackamas County residents through April 15
Free 90-minute workshops about solar power and the options to purchase, lease and finance a solar system are available to Clackamas County residents in coming weeks:

● Wed., March 28, 6-7:30 p.m. – NWREC, 15210 NE Miley Rd., Aurora

● Tues., April 10, 6-7:30 p.m. – Clackamas County Development Services Building, 150 Beavercreek Rd., Oregon City

These solar power workshops and site assessments are available thanks to Growing Solar Clackamas County, a community-led project created to help people tap into savings provided by solar power.

County residents can RSVP for a workshop or register for a free site assessment on their property either online at growingsolar.org or by calling 503-406-8381. The deadline is April 15 to sign up for a site assessment for a photo-voltaic solar system or hot water system.

Lease, purchase and financing options are available. Pricing may vary depending on roof composition, structural considerations, system options, or other legal and safety requirements. Electricity bills will reflect the savings from the solar energy; PGE customers will also get credit for solar energy that flows back to the power grid.

The Growing Solar Citizen Steering Committee vetted two contractors, LiveLight Energy of Beaverton and Sunlight Solar of Bend & Oregon City, for PV design and installation. The contractors use SolarWorld panels manufactured in Hillsboro and components from other Oregon companies.

Growing Solar is supported by the Clackamas County Office of Sustainability, and the Oregon State University Extension Service and 4-H Program. To learn more or request a site assessment, visit growingsolar.org (Lake Oswego and West Linn residents should contact Solarize West Linn & Lake Oswego, a similar initiative, at solarizewl-lo.com .)

For more information, contact:
Project Coordinator Kathy Phillips at info@growingsolar.org , 503-406-8381; or Eben Polk, Clackamas County Office of Sustainability, 503-742-4470 or epolk@co.clackamas.or.us

Mt.Hood Community College Budget Survey

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Mt. Hood Community College has asked us to share this letter with you from Michael Hay, President of MHCC. They are working through their budget process and value your input, please take part in their budget survey and help give them some well deserved feedback.

MHCC Community:

One of the ongoing challenges we face as a College and certainly the largest hurdle I have as your President is our continuing budget shortfall with decreasing revenue from the State and increasing costs of health care, PERS and other obligations we have to our students and employees.

We project a $5.5 million gap for next fiscal year and $1.7 million the following year so I am encouraging all of you to take a role in sorting out the tradeoffs we face to balance the budget while serving our students and community. The College has been holding budget informational sessions and I appreciate all of you taking a role in defining our future.

I invite you to further participate by taking the 2012-13 Mt Hood Community College (MHCC) Budget Survey

The survey is an opportunity to review currently identified options for balancing the MHCC budget next year and lay the ground work for budget decisions the following year. Completed responses will be tabulated and provided to me and the President’s Cabinet in advance of the College’s budget recommendations to the MHCC Board of Education in April.

Additional options are in the process of being developed that were not completed in time to be considered. Due to existing contracts with three employee associations, the survey does not include options regarding current financial obligations the College has to our represented employees.

Several instructional program alterations and reconstructions were reviewed through the budget request process. Proposals brought forward included items such as creating musical theatre and cyber security programs, as well as several other program changes related to requests for faculty positions. Because these proposals involve faculty positions, they are being reviewed in a process separate from the trade-off list and in collaboration with the Full-Time Faculty Association.

Out of respect for our process and to encourage future efforts to bring more openness to the process, we encourage you to only complete the survey once and to include any commentary at the end of the survey if you wish. The survey is meant as a two-way educational and conversational instrument and is intended to illuminate the choices that have been developed by both employees and students. Many of the choices listed have been reviewed, vetted and analyzed by the College’s Budget Review Team.

The survey does not include the many incremental or smaller changes (increases and decreases) that may be needed to sustain a current service level but rather is designed to provide information about major changes and tradeoffs that can assist in balancing the budget.

Please note: This tool is not designed as a ‘vote’ or a ‘popularity contest’ but rather an additional tool for me and the Cabinet to review and consider options prior to making recommendations to the Board. Your responses are anonymous although the survey does ask if you are a student, employee or community member so we have a sense of your perspective. This survey will close April 4, 2012. The survey can be accessed at http://mhcc-webapps.mhcc.edu/budget/intro.html

The MHCC FY12-13 fiscal year budget will be presented to the Board on April 18th. The Board will hold a public hearing on the proposed budget on May 2nd and approve the budget for the purposes of review by the Tax Supervising and Conservation Committee on May 9th. Final adoption of the budget is slated for June 13th.

Thank you for your participation and for all that you do for MHCC and best of luck with Finals Week!
