Connecting Students With The Workplace
Help us connect students with the workplace

Sandy High teachers would like to invite local business leaders to share their expertise and resources with students. Visit the Sandy High website to find out how you can help make learning more relevant and bridge the gap between class and career. Teachers have completed profiles that describe what they teach, and what some of their specific classroom needs are. The greatest need is for guest speakers, but some specific supplies are also being requested, including everything from Sharpies to computers, binders to bird seed, and ceramics tools to power tools. Check out the profiles to see how you can help connect our future workforce with the workplace. The profiles, with contact information, are posted at Oregon Trail School District . Or contact Bri Henderson at 506-668-8011 X256 or brianne.henderson@ortrail.k12.or.us.

Menagerie Art Show & Opening Night of Barrel Full of Pennies
Friday, March 30th, 2012
Menagerie, an art show focusing on people, animals and collections, opens Thursday April 5 at 6:45 with a reception at the Sandy Actors Theatre. Members of the Wy’east Artisans Guild present their artwork, in a variety of media, for this visually diverse exhibit. For the opening, artists will be on hand to describe the art and answer questions. Afterward, attendees are invited to stay for a full-length, preview performance of A Barrel Full of Pennies, a play by John Patrick.
This zany comedy revolves around a lovably outrageous family with a penchant for taking in all the stray dogs, ducks, birds and people who cross their path. The Menagerie theme of the artwork reflects the menagerie that this eclectic family has put together. Join the artists and actors for an enjoyable evening of entertainment.
No admission charge for the April 5 event, all donations going to benefit Wy’east Artisans Guild’s community programs. Menagerie will be on display, in the lobby of the theater through the run of the play, April 6-29. This venue is now handicap accessible. Sandy Actors Theatre is located behind the Ace Hardware at 39181 Pioneer Blvd.

This Week Around Town…
St. Patrick’s Day is here and there is so much information out there about St. Patrick’s Day. How do you find out what is real and what is not? Today I will share the story of how wearing green became a tradition. Originally, the colour associated with Saint Patrick was blue. Over the years the colour green and its association with St. Patrick’s day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St. Patrick’s’ Day as early as the 17th century. Saint Patrick was said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the Pagan Irish, and the wearing and display of the shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become an ubiquitous feature of the day. In the 1798 rebellion, to make a political statement, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on March 17th in hopes of catching public attention. The phrase “the wearing of the green’ meaning to wear a shamrock on one’s clothing, derives from a song of the same name. Well now, that was some interesting information. It makes me want to go and find out why the original color was blue. We hope you all have a fun and Safe St. Patrick’s Day Weekend. Maybe someone will find a rainbow with a pot of gold at the end, or find a four leave clover in Meinig Park?!

Seventy five percent of those polled rated job creation as an urgent or high priority, followed by public safety concerns and supporting social service programs. The percentage of respondents who identified economic growth as their number one concern grew from 6 percent in 2008 to…

Artist Reception First Friday
Tuesday, February 21st, 2012
INGA OJALA DISPLAYS ART AT SANDY AREA VISITOR’S CENTER
March 2012 Artist of the Month, Inga Ojala, shares her western style art in the Sandy Area Visitor’s Center Gallery; Reception held on “First Friday” March 2, 2012 from 5-8pm
Inga Ojala’s western style art will be on display at the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center throughout the month of March 2012. A reception will be held for this artist on Friday, March 2 from 5-8pm in conjunction with the City of Sandy’s “First Fridays.” Light Refreshments and beverages will be served. The event is free and all are welcome to attend.
Ojala, who is local to Eagle Creek, Oregon, gains inspiration from the Mt. Hood area and her travels throughout the United States. Her art is characterized by images and styles unique to the Great American West. Much of Ojala’s art incorporates wildlife, fish, and landscapes. This show will début a new collection created by Ojala. She also has notebooks, cards, prints of her art, and soaps for sale at the Sandy Area Visitor’s Center.
Each month the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center selects a new featured artist(s) to display in their gallery. Artists are local to the Sandy area, Mt. Hood Territory, Clackamas County, or have created shows specifically for this venue to reflect Oregon’s natural beauty in the Mt. Hood Territory.
Winter hours, 9am-4pm, at the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center are affective through February 29, 2012. As of March 1, 2012, hours will return to 10am-5pm. The facility is located at 38963 Pioneer Blvd. Sandy, OR 97055, on the left side of Pioneer Blvd., and is a convenient stopping place for visitors and locals who want information about Sandy, Mt. Hood, and other destinations in Oregon.
