artist kathyn de Vries with Artworks & Earthworks.
Kathryn de Vries has a wonderful fascination with textures and colors. Her favorite technique is forming bowls by a forging technique called ‘Raising’.
She has brought in beautiful pendant necklaces with matching earrings, purses and scarves… she will be bringing us more items for you to see and purchase!

Reopening of Jimmy’s Restaurant

Chamber member, Jimmy’s Restaurant has reopened with new hours after a period of management and staff reorganization. They are now open Wed-Sun 5-9pm, and feature live music (from a variety of artists including owner and guitarist Jim Warren) on Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm. Come enjoy the entertainment and their great menu of Italian, German and American cuisine!

Random Acts of Kindness

We have several things going on that we need your help with this month.

First, there is a mentally challenged woman in Brightwood who it appears has been taken advantage of, and now she needs help with her rent to prevent being evicted. Her landlady is being incredibly understanding and helpful about all this, but our person of interest needs to come up with $143.00 by next Tuesday to cover her rent until the first of February. A stopgap measure has already been made to keep her housed, but now things are really stretching the landlady’s generosity.

From what we have been able to gather, this woman’s mother was her caretaker up until the mother’s death. Before she died, mom saw to it that her daughter would receive financial aid from the state and from a union to which she belonged. After she died, a man was assigned to look after her finances. Not long ago, he was removed from that responsibility. According to our person of interest, he was taking some of her money for himself, and left her unable to meet her survival needs and rent obligations. So she’s in a tough spot at the moment.

Folks, this is one of those things that can either make you crazy with anger or grief, but we can easily turn this woman’s situation around with just $143.00, and send a clear message to her that there are far more good people in the world than bad. So let’s do that. Her landlady is already working with her to get things straightened out and on an even keel to ensure a steady and reliable revenue stream that is more easily accessible to our person of interest. We at RAK will also work to see that her finances are straightened out on a permanent basis.

This is a time critical issue, folks. So please don’t delay.

Next on the plate is dinner! This coming Sunday, January 20, Roseone’s restaurant is putting on a dinner for about 40 local people who are less fortunate than the rest of us. Roseone’s may be better known to some of you as Goodie Junction. If you have not experienced the four course Italian menu at Roseone’s yet, you don’t know what you are missing. The food is perhaps some of the best in Oregon. An amazingly surprising meal that will knock your socks off, and for a lot less than you would expect.

Roseone’s is going to start doing these “Friendship Tables” on what will probably be a quarterly basis, and will solicit names of local people to benefit from these meals from various local charitable organizations. RAK is honored to be the first such organization to participate in this new venture in conjunction with Barbara Payette of the Oregon Trail Sandy school district Forget-Me-Not program. The beneficiaries of this first meal will be local schoolchildren and their parents.

For this Sunday, we need a couple volunteers to help bus the tables. The guests will be arriving in two shifts. The first shift at 5 p.m., and the second at 5:30. The bussers will be needed from 5:30 to about 7:30. Negotiations are underway between RAK and Roseone’s so that the volunteers will be rewarded with the aforementioned sock-knocking meal. So don’t delay. Be the first on your block to participate as a Friendship Tables volunteer.

Next, RAK is on the case for another cancer victim. Myles Wright is a 22 year old native American with Leukemia. He has just entered a new phase of treatment where he is an inpatient at OHSU for 3-5 days every other week while he receives chemotherapy.

RAK is putting on another charity Texas Hold ‘Em tournament a week from this Friday, January 25. This tournament will start at 6:30. Please note that time as this is earlier than previous tournaments at the request of the owner of Crossroads restaurant. The terms and conditions of this tournament will be the same as the last tournament we held. So please come on out and help us fight the good fight against the young man’s leukemia.

And finally, at RAK HQ there is a catalog for the Specialty Merchandising Company. Local distributor Ryan Ogan has offered to contribute 40 percent of all proceeds from his SMC sales to Random Acts of Kindness! So come on down and take a look. SMC offers home decor, toys, bed and bath, and kitchen items.
